Cholesterol is an important fatty substance present in the human body. They form the outer lining for every cell in the body. Apart from this, cholesterol is also found in the human blood. Under normal circumstances, liver would be able to convert 95% of cholesterol into bile acids useful to the body and the remaining 5% is excreted. However, when the cholesterol in the food is high, it is not completely eliminated or utilized by the human body. They get deposited on the artery walls, leading to the thickening and narrowing of the artery. This increases the risk of coronary heart disease. So, to keep our heart healthy, we need to know the foods that lower cholesterol and include them in our diet.
Foods that Lower Cholesterol
There are two types of cholesterol in the body – HDL or good cholesterol and LDL or bad cholesterol. While the LDL is responsible for narrowing of the artery and causing heart disease, the HDL helps in removing the bad cholesterol from the artery walls to be disposed by the liver. Hence, we need to choose a diet that can lower the LDL and increase the HDL.
Here are useful diet tips to lower the bad cholesterol in the body:
1. Vegetables and fruits reduce the level of LDL. Hence, make them a part of your everyday diet.
2. Nuts are rich in fiber and antioxidants. Apart from being tasty, they help in reducing the LDL. However, limit the nuts intake to less than 1.5 ounces a day.
3. Good news for the fish lovers out there! Fish such as salmon, sardine, tuna and tout help reduce the LDL level, if they are consumed without deep frying them in oil.
4. Include food that is high in fiber and complex carbohydrate. Oatmeal and whole grain cereal such as brown rice and popcorn would be a good choice.
5. Garlic helps to reduce the level of cholesterol.
6. Unsaturated fat such as extra virgin olive oil, soya bean oil, canola oil and sunflower oil can reduce the level of LDL.
Foods that are to be avoided
1. Avoid saturated fat and trans fat. Chocolates, animal fats, hydrogenated vegetable fat, butter and margarine are some of the foods that have to be avoided.
2. Avoid carbohydrates such as potato and white rice.
Apart from consuming foods that lower cholesterol, there are other things that you need to follow. To effectively fight the bad cholesterol, exercise regularly. Reduce the portion of your meal by half. Instead of going for fried food, opt for baked or steamed food.
Make a healthy diet choice and lead a hearty life!
