Teeth whitening business is a billion dollar industry. There are hundreds of  players in the market offering various products to lure the customers. Today, if you decide to whiten your teeth, you would most likely be confused by the wide variety of choices that are available in the market. And, choosing the right teeth whitening method isn’t easy either!

Some methods work, some don’t and there are a few methods that work only for a certain type of teeth. So, before spending your money, you need to make sure you are choosing the right whitening method. And, that is precisely what I’m going to help you do!

Effective Whitening Methods

Let us first see the effective whitening methods.

1. Professional in-office Teeth Whitening: This is dentist-administered whitening method. This method involves bleaching the teeth with peroxide and exposing them to laser light. However, if you are concerned about having laser beam directed at your teeth, you might opt for deep bleaching method that does not involve exposure to laser light. This method produces the maximum whitening and the effect lasts for year. Also, the process is quick and produces immediate results. However, professional in-office cleaning might cost you hundreds of dollars.

2. Custom-made bleaching trays: In this method, you can have your dentist custom-make bleaching trays that fit your mouth.  Once the bleaching trays are ready, you can carry out the process at home. Just fill the tray with the bleaching solution and wear it over your teeth for a few hours every day until you see the desired results. Depending upon the concentration of the bleaching solution and the duration of wearing the tray, it might take a week or two for the whitening process. This is slow yet effective method and it costs lesser than in-office teeth whitening.

Methods that Don’t Work

1. Whitening Strips: This involves sticking separate whitening strips for the upper and the lower rows of your teeth, for a few hours.  However, a flat whitening strip cannot reach the grooves between the teeth and hence cannot perform uniform whitening.

2. Kiosk Whitening: You need to think twice before opting for teeth whitening at a kiosk. The staffs at these kiosks do not have formal dental training. Also, they do not make any promise about the extent of whitening. Hence, you might be risking your dental health for very little or no whitening.

If you are pregnant, nursing or have gums, cavity and other dental problem, it is recommended that you stay away from teeth whitening. Also, teeth whitening methods produce excellent results for people with yellow undertone than those with brownish undertone. Above all, remember that the effect of teeth whitening varies from one person to another.
